While there, Jeffrey served on the Students’ Representative Council first being elected by his peers as Business Director and the following year being elected college-wide as President. As Business Director, Jeffrey initiated Mohawk College’s first student-to-student used book sale and also initiated and coordinated the first Career Fair which was attended by twenty businesses interested in hiring Mohawk College graduates. Then as President, Jeffrey drafted the blueprint for the Mohawk Students Association which two years later amalgamated and replaced the Students Representative Council and the Students’ Union Corporation. Another major success was mobilizing student support to prevent Mohawk College from implementing an 18 week semester, as other Ontario colleges were also considering, but which would have negatively impacted co-op and summer employment opportunities. Mohawk students successfully reversed the province-wide trend in favour of a semester system which still met the colleges’ objective to better utilize faculty and building facilities – a win-win solution. After graduating from Mohawk College, in 1994 Jeffrey began his career as a self-employed tax preparer and later that year was accepted as an Advisor with Berkshire Securities Inc. As both the tax and investment businesses grew it became increasingly necessary to operate both from one location. So during early 2004 Jeffrey became associated with FundEX Investments Inc. which allowed both businesses to operate at 662 Upper James St. These became Abbington Investments and Abbington Tax & Estate Services Inc., the first two businesses of Abbington Financial Group. The subsequent acquisition of his mortgage agent licence followed by his life insurance licence has brought the number of Abbington businesses to four. Jeffrey is married to a wonderful woman and together they have two energetic young boys.
